Eos Teams with Area Foundations to Provide Emergency Assistance Grants

December 2009

The economic downturn has hit many Massachusetts families hard in the past year, with requests for donated Thanksgiving turkeys up 14% and food provided through affiliates of the Greater Boston Food Bank up 25% from January through August. That’s why, for the second year in a row, the Eos Foundation has teamed with other area foundations to provide emergency assistance. As reported in the Boston Globe, Eos and its partners—the Boston Foundation, Combined Jewish Philanthropies, the Highland Street Foundation, the The Linde Family Foundation, United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley and a family that prefers to remain anonymous—will provide over $1.6 million this winter for emergency fuel, food, shelter, and financial assistance. Last year, Eos and three other foundations contributed $1.1 million in emergency aid.

Said Eos Foundation President Andrea Silbert, "This means we can strengthen our ability to put food on the table through the network of food pantries right away, and, at the same time, we can support increased use of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program by those entitled to that nutrition benefit, to reduce the number of residents who need to use food pantries.”

Eos’ $300,000 commitment will primarily focus on fighting hunger, one of the foundation’s core mission areas. Grantees include the Family Pantry of Cape Cod, the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, and more.
