Growing Success for Eos Grantee

November 2009

How can wild arugula salad and kale soup change the world? Growing Places Garden Project (GPGP), a Clinton-based Eos grantee, recently held its first annual Harvest Celebration, drawing a crowd of 250 who braved an early-season snowstorm to support local agriculture and GPGP’s mission of helping low-income individuals learn to grow their own food.

Over its eight-year history, GPGP has helped nearly 700 people start gardens, gain self-confidence, and take control of their health. Eligible participants receive a donated vegetable garden and are taught, over a two-year period, how to grow, harvest, and maintain their gardens. They eventually reach self-sufficiency with their gardening.

The goal of the Harvest Celebration, said Executive Director Jodi Breidel, was to recognize the volunteers, donors, and gardeners who have made GPGP a success. Attendees enjoyed a locally-grown fall menu provided by the Gibbet Hill Grill in Groton and the Tailgaters Grille in Clinton, and screened the critically acclaimed film Food Inc., an exposé of the nation’s food industry practices. The event, said Breidel, drove home the message of “how to make an impact in the world and our communities with the simple decisions we make every day.”
