Witnesses to Hunger Visits Capitol Hill

April 2009

In our country, hunger is often invisible. That’s why Mariana Chilton—a Principal Investigator for Eos grantee Children’s HealthWatch—gave cameras to 42 low-income mothers to document the reality of their lives. Photographing their Philadelphia neighborhoods and experiences, their mission was to inform the public and decisionmakers about how government policies affect their young children’s health and well-being.

In December, Chilton testified at a Senate Agriculture Subcommittee meeting, where she met Pennsylvania Senator Robert Casey and told him about Witnesses to Hunger. Struck by the idea’s power, he invited the women and their traveling exhibit to show in the Senate Russell Building Rotunda from May 4-8, 2009. The opening event at the Senate is on May 6 from 12:00-2:00 p.m.

“These women are the experts on poverty and hunger,” says Chilton. “This is an opportunity for our leaders to hear directly from the low-income mothers affected by their policies, and be taught by them.”
