Eos Grantees in the News
Project Bread Takes Steps to End Hunger
In 1969, a group of local activists organized the first Walk for Hunger, raising $26,000 to help neighbors in need. Four decades later—on Sunday, May 3rd—Eos grantee Project Bread will bring together 40,000 participants amidst the worst economic conditions in our lifetime. They aim to raise millions to aid the 522,000 Bay State residents now struggling to put food on the table due to high food prices and the global recession.
The 20 mile walk (beginning and ending at Boston Common, and looping through five communities) is the oldest continual pledge walk in America. It will help fund over 400 emergency food programs across Massachusetts, which last year alone served over 43.4 million meals.
The logistics are intense, requiring nine checkpoints, 54 shuttle buses, 10,000 gallons of water, and 30,000 snack bags—not to mention 300 gallons of sunscreen. But the experience has a profound impact on both participants and the neighbors they help. Says 12 year-old Alex from Newton, who has participated in the Walk since kindergarten, “The reason I do the Walk every year is because people are less fortunate and they need the food. When I'm walking, I think about the people who don’t have what I have. It makes me want to come back each year in order to help them.”
